Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook. Key Learnings from Gary Vaynerchuk @HasteAndHustle 2017
I was lucky enough to attend the first Haste and Hustle Digital Media Conference in Niagara this past week, where I walked away with some fascinating revelations, and a new approach to success in marketing. The event was buzzing with positive energy, creative minds, and new approaches to old theories. The keynote speaker on Friday was Gary Vaynerchuk, a well known guru in the marketing world. He is an American serial entrepreneur, CEO, investor, public speaker, internet personality, founder of VaynerMedia, and best selling author of “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World”. We were all, to say the least, extremely excited to hear his straight talk in person. Below, are some key messages I took away with me.
Give, Give, Give, Ask.
“Wow, I am so fucking nervous” were the first words out of Pedro’s mouth. It was the beginning of Gary’s speech, and he wanted to start the session off with a Q&A with the audience. A young student stood up, introduced himself as Pedro, and nervously confessed to the media mogul that he was his idol. Gary nodded his head with gratitude and told him to go on.
“If I get up on stage and do a back-flip for you, will you hire me on as an unpaid intern?” Pedro asked, his voice shaking in excitement. Without skipping a beat, Gary responded.
For a couple seconds, there was awkward silence from the crowd. Some people laughed nervously, while others looked on at the poor kid, whose cheeks had now turned bright red.
“And I’ll tell you why.” Gary continued. “Because the minute you go into any situation with an expectation – you lose.” (This, I would learn, was the basis of his book “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook”). “In business, giving is more important than taking. The key to success is give, give, give… then ask. Never expect anything. And that is why I give you a big fat fucking no Pedro.”
It was like a lightbulb had gone off in the room. I got it. We got it. Pedro got it. Giving – that was the answer. This was just one of many (as Oprah calls them) ‘ah – ha’ moments throughout listening to Gary. He told it like it was, and that is what we all needed to hear.
Be Your Own Biggest Fan
Gary credits his high self-esteem to his upbringing. His parents were always 100% supportive, loving, and full of praise for every idea he had. “If you’re not your own biggest fan, then you’ve already lost. If you had a bad upbringing, and didn’t get the love you needed and now it’s affecting you, get that poison out. NOW. Talk to a professional – anything. But you need to be confidant.”
Take Ownership of Your Mistakes
“I am completely happy in my life, because I can say that everything that has gone wrong has been my fault. And I, and I alone, have the power to change it.” Gary states about his own happiness, and being able to move on and not dwell on things that haven’t worked out. He continues: “Maybe then, it’s the secret of realizing there is no problem you can’t solve. Maybe then, the realization that everything is your fault, will set you free.”
Work, Work, Work
Gary stated, matter of factly, that his employees have taken more vacations in the past year than he has in 10 years. And he isn’t complaining. “The only controllable thing you have is your work ethic. There is no overnight success. There is no easy way to the top. It’s simple: WORK.” He continues: “I didn’t tell anyone about my goals for years. In my twenties, I kept silent. Only in my thirties have I started to speak. You see, success, true success, is about action – not talk. And now I can’t shut up.”
